Komaj 18-letni Kanadčan Han Jie (Austin) Wang iz Vancouvra je razvil mikrobske gorivne celice, ki bolj učinkovito spreminjajo organske odpadke v električno energijo. Za svoj dosežek je prejel nagrado Gordona E. Moora in ček za 75 tisoč ameriških dolarjev.

Wang je odkril specifične gene v genetsko izboljšani bakteriji E. coli, ki ji omogočajo, da bolj učinkovito proizvaja električno energijo. Njegov sistem lahko proizvede bistveno več energije kot obstoječi procesi v mikrobskih gorivnih celicah, stroški pa so primerljivi s sončno energijo, zaradi česar je prepričan, da bodo mikrobske gorivne celice postale komercialno uspešne.

Na letošnjem Intelovem mednarodnem sejmu znanosti in tehnike je sicer sodelovalo več kot 1700 mladih znanstvenikov, ki so bili izbrani na 419 povezanih sejmih v več kot 77 državah in regijah.  Slovenijo, je s projektom Vpliv treh pesticidov na heterotrofne talne mikroorganizme v kategoriji Mikrobiologija zastopala Gabriela Štumberger, dijakinja II. gimnazije Maribor. Poleg glavnih zmagovalcev je približno 600 finalistov prejelo nagrade in priznanja za svoje inovativno raziskovalno delo.
